Apple has agreed to pay the Swiss railway company SBB $21 million for the right to use its classic, much admired clock design which appears in train stations all over Europe.
The railway, which owns the patent to the design, has been unhappy since iOS 6 debuted in September with a clock app that was basically identical to the design created by SBB engineer, Hans Hilfiker, in 1944.
The same design (see comparison above - Apple iOS clock on left) is the basis for the popular line of watches from Mondaine. Mondaine says they have an exclusive license with SBB that means it should be the only company with the rights to the design.
It's unclear whether Mondaine will directly benefit from the financial settlement but they are reportedly happy that Apple has provided increased visibility for the design.
