How Important Are Watches to Switzerland’s Economy?

When you think of Switzerland, you think of beautiful mountains, cheese, chocolate, and of course, fine watches. But just how important are Swiss watches to the nation's economy? Very important. A recent story by BusinessWeek finds that watchmaking is the nation’s fourth-largest export industry, with sales last year of $11.5 billion (US). Another interesting tidbit in the article: Switzerland produces more than 95 of all watches that sell for more than $1,000, a clear signal that the country owns the luxury watch segment.
